Putting down new grout? Don’t forget grout sealing.

When putting down new grout, sealing it is imperative.

Grout sealing is an extremely important step after putting down new grout.  Is it absolutely necessary?  It is if you want to protect your grout from discoloration from dirt, dust, grime, and more.  It is necessary if you want to improve your return on investment because proper grout sealant applied to new grout is an integral part of extending the life of your grout.  The Grout Medic offers professional grout sealing for clients, even if we did not install your tile or grout.  It is also not a safe assumption that your grout was sealed in your new home.  This step is not usually a part of the home building and tile installation process.  Grout sealing after cleaning is also an essential part of maintaining a healthy surface and clean appearance for high-traffic areas.

Grout sealing is not a ‘one-and-done’ process.

Grout sealing is not just important at the start, but also for continued care and maintenance of your tiled surface.  When your sealant is applied to new grout, you should be able to get a couple of years of use before your grout requires professional cleaning and sealing.  The frequency of cleaning and sealing grout will greatly depend upon the location of your tile.  If your tile is in a busy commercial space, you might find the need to have your grout cleaned and sealed every few months.  For extremely busy homes, a yearly grout cleaning and sealing service might be required.  For less busy spaces, like seldom-used guest bathrooms, you could get years of service from your initial grout sealing process.  If you are unsure if your new grout was sealed, or could benefit from a professional cleaning and sealing, The Grout Medic is here to help.

Which grout sealer should you use?

We recommend using only high-quality contractor-grade sealant for any grout sealing project.  No matter if you are sealing your brand new grout application, or applying sealant after professional grout cleaning.  It is of the utmost importance that you know that home remedies, like essential oil of lemon, should not be used in your grout cleaning and sealing process.  When it comes to properly sealing your grout, deep-penetrating sealant should always be used.  There is but one caveat to sealing grout.  Epoxy grout does not require sealing.

Make sure your new grout is protected with the correct type of grout sealant, whether you are putting down new grout or having your grout cleaned.
