When Shower Caulking Goes Wrong

This title might read like a feature film.  If this were a documentary, it would be a cautionary tale.

Oh, the woe and horror of it all!  While we are not filmmakers here at The Grout Medic, we are documentarians of sorts.  As grout and tile experts, we believe it is incumbent on us to provide information for home and business owners, that will help them avoid the perils of shower caulking gone wrong.  “What,” you may ask, “could possibly go wrong?”

What could go wrong with shower caulking?

Bad shower caulking could mean tile water damage repair.

It is not a foregone conclusion that if your caulk begins to fail, that you will sustain water damage.  However, if shower caulking is allowed to languish in a deplorable state, water damage is imminent.  It seems that if all we must do is keep an eye on our shower’s caulk to avoid water damage, then water damage should never occur.  How hard can it be to make sure that our shower caulking is in good shape?  Caulk is something that is often overlooked until it is literally turning black with mold and falling off.  Home and business owners often do not understand that the small areas of separation in a caulk line could, over time, be allowing large amounts of water to seep to the structure of their shower walls and floor.  It is important that if you begin to see your shower caulking in a state of separation or shrinking, that you get in touch with The Grout Medic to discuss our professional recaulking services.

Trust the pros with your shower caulking or tile water damage repair needs.

When it comes to something as “simple” as shower recaulking, you might believe that you can knock it out in a couple of hours on your own.  It is true that most shower recaulking projects do not entail a lot of time.  However, they must be properly executed.  There are a couple of things that can go wrong with a DIY shower recaulking project.  First, you should not add new caulk on top of old caulk.  It simply will not properly seal.  Additionally, if you are able to remove all the old caulk, will your new caulk application look great?  Applying caulk is not as simple as it seems.  Worse still, is that you could be sealing in mold and mildew behind your new caulk.  The Grout Medic will remove your old caulk, clean the area, and treat it with a mold preventative before reapplying your new caulk.  If your caulk is in an extreme state of disrepair and has been for some time, it is always better to call on our grout and tile experts to determine if you might have water damage lurking beneath.
